I can’t say that I’m instantly sold on the dramatic conceit of traveling back in time to reveal snapshots of Big and Little Edie’s earlier years. On the other hand, providing crucial backstories goes a long way in making these characters understandable and sympathetic. Jessica Lange is scarily good as the papery skinned, cat covered matriarch.
To me, this take on the shepherd image embodies the kind of leader we increasingly need: someone who understands how to create a context or culture in which other people are willing and able to lead. This image of the shepherd behind his flock is an acknowledgment that leadership is a collective activity in which different people at different times depending on their strengths, or “nimbleness” come forward to move the group in the direction it needs to go. While John Hughes’s characters worried incessantly about fitting in, Ryder’s precocious characters from the pining band geek Rina in Lucas (1986) to the Goth weirdo who conversed with ghosts in Beetlejuice (1988) revelled in their outsider status.Ryder’s appeal was two tiered and universal. She was tough enough to play sassy heroines while her doll like features, willowy frame and knowing line readings hinted at a more vulnerable, melancholy interior.
