The collection includes: CBC News Toronto reporter Steven D’Souza, former sex trade worker and novelist Todd Klinck, Jamaican born standup comedian Morgan Smith, and Joe Anne Vanhorn, a woman who has struggled with bi polar illness for two decades.Anne Marie Aikins, TPL’s corporate communications manager, said that book selections reflect themes that are important in Toronto from immigration and cultural identity to dealing with disability and discrimination.”We wanted our human books to represent the landscape of Toronto, so people will be able to see in our collection people with similar stories to their own.”One of the project’s human books, Rosa Brooks, a recent high school grad who has encountered homophobia during her life, told CBC’s Fresh Air program that she felt it was important for the public to “hear out from real people” in order to “put a face to the story.”Aikins said the response to the pilot project has been positive so far, with people requesting holds on some of the human books. TPL will evaluate Saturday’s event to see if there’s interest in making the human library a permanent collection, perhaps by displaying recorded conversations with some of the human books.The participating libraries include the Toronto Reference Library, the Bloor Gladstone branch, the Lillian H.
